## Overview

GermainUX ships with a rich, preconfigured data model that covers user experience, business processes, applications and technology performance. Every organization is different, so the data model is designed to be **extended and customized** rather than fixed.

When data does not fit the out-of-the-box model, GermainUX can store it, correlate it with existing monitoring data, and make it available to KPIs, analytics, AI, dashboards, reports and automation, without waiting for a new GermainUX release.

## Ways to Extend the Data Model

| Capability | What it lets you do |
| - | - |
| **Custom facts and tables** | Create new data types with their own fields to store data that does not fit the standard model. See [Dynamic Database Table Creation](https://docs.germainux.com/management/data-analysis/dynamic-database-table-creation.md). |
| **Custom fields** | Add string, numeric and other fields to a custom data type, and choose which fields are kept in aggregated data after raw data is purged. |
| **Reusable dimensions** | Attach existing dimensions (such as system, user, user agent, application, database, location or HTTP referrer) to custom data so it can be filtered and correlated like built-in data. |
| **Business context** | Capture application context such as username, tenant, role or business object with [metadata extractors](https://docs.germainux.com/integrations/browser-monitoring/metadata-extractors.md), and organize data into custom hierarchies. |
| **Custom KPIs** | Define new KPIs, measures and pivots on top of standard or custom data. See [KPIs](https://docs.germainux.com/management/manage-kpis.md). |
| **Display names** | Present fields, KPIs, measures and pivots with business-friendly [display names](https://docs.germainux.com/analytics/kpis/display-name-for-kpi-field.md) that differ from their internal names. |
| **Categorization** | Group and classify data with your own rules using [Data Categorization](https://docs.germainux.com/analytics/data-categorization.md). |
| **KPI relationships** | Define how KPIs relate to each other so GermainUX can surface signals that explain a change. See [KPI Relationships](https://docs.germainux.com/analytics/kpis/kpi-relationships.md). |
| **External data** | Push data from other systems, applications or databases into GermainUX with the [Data Ingestion API](https://docs.germainux.com/management/data-analysis/data-ingestion-api.md). |
| **Data access** | Query standard and custom data programmatically with the [Data Query API](https://docs.germainux.com/management/data-analysis/data-query-api.md). |
| **Retention** | Configure how long raw and aggregated data is kept with [Data Retention](https://docs.germainux.com/management/data-retention.md). |

> [!NOTE]
>
> Creating a new custom data type requires a restart of the GermainUX services. Indexes and other database tuning options are not generated automatically for custom tables, so have your DBA add them for optimal performance.

## Benefits

* **Fits your business:** model your own objects, processes and attributes instead of forcing them into a generic structure.
* **One place for analysis:** correlate custom and external data with user experience, workflow and technology data.
* **No release dependency:** extend the model through configuration, without deploying a new version of GermainUX.
* **Full platform support:** custom data works with KPIs, AI, dashboards, reports, alerts and automation.

## Customized for You

The Germain Team can design and implement data model extensions for your specific use case **at no additional cost**, including new data sources, custom data types, custom KPIs, dashboards and automation.
