**SOAP Observability**

Monitor the availability, performance, errors, and functional behavior of SOAP web services with GermainUX.

> [!NOTE]
>
> GermainUX periodically executes configured SOAP requests, measures their performance, validates their responses, and analyzes the results in real time.

## Monitor SOAP Service Availability

Continuously verify that critical SOAP services and operations are available.

GermainUX can detect whether:

* The endpoint is reachable
* A connection can be established
* The request completes within the expected time
* The service returns a response
* The HTTP response status is acceptable
* Network and TLS connectivity are operational
* The SOAP operation returns the expected result

This enables teams to detect integration failures before they affect users or critical business processes.

## SOAP Performance Analysis

Measure the end-to-end response time of SOAP operations.

Analyze:

* Average response time
* Minimum and maximum response time
* Median and percentile response time
* Performance trends
* Slow transactions
* SLA violations
* Performance differences between services
* Performance differences between environments and monitoring locations

Historical analysis helps identify degradation that may not be visible from an individual request.

## Transaction Performance Comparison

When analyzing a slow or failed SOAP operation, use Comparison to compare its performance with another execution of the same operation, such as the fastest, slowest, most recent, first seen, or last seen.

Comparison can reveal:

* Differences in response time for the same SOAP operation
* Which steps, services, or endpoints caused the slowdown
* Performance differences between successful and failed SOAP requests
* Errors or bottlenecks affecting SOAP web services
* Potential root causes of SOAP operation performance degradation

This helps pinpoint why a SOAP operation is slower or failing, identify the underlying bottlenecks, and accelerate resolution to improve service reliability and business process performance.

More details on [**Transaction Performance Comparison**](/main/4-analysis-dashboard.md#comparison-of-bad-vs-good).

## SOAP Response Validation

A successful HTTP request does not necessarily mean that the SOAP operation completed successfully.

GermainUX can validate the returned response to identify functional failures.

Validation can include:

* Expected HTTP status
* Expected XML or text content
* Missing expected content
* Unexpected content
* SOAP Faults
* Response-size conditions
* Customer-defined response conditions

For example, GermainUX can verify that the response contains the expected success value and does not contain a SOAP Fault.

## SOAP Fault and Error Detection

Detect conditions such as:

* Endpoint unavailable
* Connection failure
* Connection timeout
* Response timeout
* Unexpected HTTP status
* Empty response

> **Show all 13**
>
> * Invalid response
> * Expected content missing
> * Unexpected response content
> * SOAP Fault
> * Authentication failure
> * TLS or certificate failure
> * Abnormally slow response

GermainUX can track these conditions over time to identify recurring or emerging problems.

## Integration Monitoring

SOAP services are often dependencies of larger applications and business processes.

GermainUX can monitor SOAP integrations involving systems such as:

* CRM
* ERP
* eCommerce
* Payment systems
* Order management
* Fulfillment

> **Show all 9**
>
> * Customer service
> * Internal applications
> * Third-party services

SOAP monitoring data can be correlated with other telemetry collected by GermainUX to help determine the impact and potential source of an issue.

## Business Process Monitoring

Monitor SOAP services that are required for critical business processes.

Examples include:

* Customer lookup
* Account validation
* Order creation
* Payment authorization
* Inventory lookup
* Shipment processing
* Customer-service operations

This helps teams determine whether a technical SOAP failure is affecting a business process.

## Proactive Monitoring

Execute safe SOAP requests on a schedule to identify failures before real transactions are affected.

For example:

Every 5 minutes
Execute SOAP request
Validate response
Measure response time
Create KPI
Evaluate SLA

This provides continuous visibility even when no real user is currently executing the operation.

## Multi-Environment Monitoring

Monitor the same SOAP operation across:

* Development
* Test
* QA
* Staging
* Production

Compare availability, response time, errors, and functional behavior between environments.

This can also help identify changes introduced by a release or configuration update.

## Root Cause Analysis

SOAP monitoring observes the request and response available to the monitoring component.

For deeper root-cause analysis, GermainUX can correlate SOAP failures with separately monitored:

* Applications
* APIs
* Servers
* Databases
* Logs
* Network

> **Show all 9**
>
> * Infrastructure
> * Business processes
> * Other integrations

This can help determine whether an issue originates from the SOAP endpoint itself or from one of its dependencies.

## KPIs and Analytics

Depending on the configuration, SOAP monitoring can provide KPIs such as:

* SOAP Service Availability
* SOAP Transaction
* SOAP Error
* SOAP Fault
* HTTP Request

Measures can include:

* Request count
* Success count
* Failure count
* Availability percentage
* Response time
* Error rate
* SLA violations
* Response size

Results can be analyzed by dimensions such as:

* Service
* Operation
* Endpoint
* Application
* Environment
* Monitoring location

> **Show all 10**
>
> * HTTP status
> * Error or fault
> * Server
> * Business process

## SLAs and Automated Analysis

Configure SLAs and rules to detect conditions such as:

* Service unavailable
* Response time above threshold
* Connection timeout
* Unexpected HTTP status
* SOAP Fault returned
* Expected content missing

> **Show all 9**
>
> * Unexpected business result
> * Increased error rate
> * Abnormal performance compared with historical behavior

## Alerts and Automation

When GermainUX detects a SOAP issue, it can:

* Send an alert
* Notify subscribed users through a Watch
* Generate a report
* Call an authorized HTTP endpoint
* Execute an authorized script or local program
* Start an approved diagnostic or remediation workflow

Automated actions affecting production systems or business data should be explicitly authorized and tested.

## Common Use Cases

| Use Case | Example |
| - | - |
| Availability | Verify that a SOAP service responds |
| Functional validation | Confirm that the response contains the expected business result |
| Performance | Detect operations exceeding their response-time SLA |
| Integration monitoring | Detect failures between CRM, ERP, payment, or fulfillment systems |
| Business-process monitoring | Verify that a critical service dependency is operational |
| Release validation | Compare behavior before and after deployment |
| Multi-environment monitoring | Compare the same operation across environments |
| Proactive monitoring | Detect failures before real transactions are affected |
